TOKYO WINE SOCIETY TASTING

Rioja

November 16, 2019

When Phylloxera hit France 150 years ago, some winemakers from Bordeaux moved to Rioja for survival, to tie-up with local vineyards such as Marquez de Murrieta, to create panish wine similar to Bordeaux. Rioja has been making excellent wines happily ever after. Then, some winemakers have started making wine focused more on vineyards with newer way to grow grapes, trying to go beyond just "Rioja". And now,new categorizations which is more geographically precise has introduced to Rioja, started on 2017 vintage.
We have tasted wines from wineries where winemakers focus more on "vineyards," some from traditional Rioja style, and Bordeaux wine to compare with. Here is the result.
